Hot Climate and Your Health: What You Need to Know
Rising temperatures and long heatwaves are a problem in many parts of Kerala. The hot weather is not just uncomfortable it also affects our health how well we work and how we feel. We need to tell people how to stay safe and healthy when it's very hot especially since the weather is changing.
When it is hot, we can get sick with things like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. When our body loses water than it gets it cannot work properly. We should not ignore signs like sweating much feeling dizzy feeling tired having a headache and having muscle cramps. If it is very bad, we can get heatstroke, which's a big medical problem that needs help right away.
One of the ways to protect ourselves is to drink a lot of water. We should drink water all day even if we are not thirsty to help our body stay at the temperature. We can also drink things like tender coconut water, buttermilk and fresh fruit juice to help our body have water. We should not drink much coffee or sugary drinks because they can make us lose more water.
What we eat is also important when it is hot. As all of you know, we should eat food like fruits, vegetables and foods that have a lot of water to help our body stay cool. Watermelon, cucumber oranges and leafy greens are good to eat when it is hot. We should not eat much heavy, oily or spicy food because it can make our body hotter.
We should also try not to go when the sun is very strong usually between 11 am and 3 pm. If we have to go out, we should wear light clothes use an umbrella or a hat and put sunscreen on our skin. We should also make sure our homes are well ventilated and use fans or cooling systems to stay cool.
Some people are more likely to get sick from the heat like children, old people and people who are already sick. We need to take care of them and make sure they are drinking enough water and staying healthy. If we see signs that they are not feeling well we should take them to the doctor away.
